Baylor\'s newest crop of students began their college careers by driving nails and sweating bullets during Welcome Week. Baylor\'s Habitat for Humanity - the nation\'s oldest collegiate chapter – marked its 20th anniversary with Project Build Hope, a venture that brought together more than 2,000 incoming freshmen on founders mall to frame out a new house for a local family. The project is part of the university\'s \"First Step\" (FirStep) volunteer experience for incoming freshmen and shows just how important calling and service are in the lives of Baylor students. Way to go newbies, I hope the sunburns and calouses heal soon!

Dr. Thomas Kidd can\'t keep his mind out of the past, and it\'s paying off – he has just been named a Top Young Historian by the History News Network. Kidd is a prolific writer with 5 books to his credit and was also awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 2006-07. Equally at home teaching students as researching colonial evangelicalism, Kidd also was named an Outstanding professor in 2006 by the Graduate Student Association, and Faculty member of the year in 2004 by student government. Great research, great teaching – Great for Baylor!

Physics professor Dr. Bennie F.L. Ward received an honorable mention recently in an international essay competition by the Gravity Research Foundation. The competition honored \"the most pioneering essays in research on the subject of gravitation, its theory, application or effects.\" It just goes to show that Bohr\'s theory of quantum mechanics and Einstein\'s fundemental general theory of relativity really can get along, as long as you remember the proper expansion into powers in the quantum of action h! (How\'s that?) Anyway, congrats Dr. Ward, your efforts demonstrate how Baylor is practicing physics on the cutting-edge.

Live Oak’s annual Maundy Thursday service will be held on Thursday, March 20 at 9:15 a.m. in the First Baptist sanctuary. This service will be in lieu of the regular Tuesday chapel, so please remind your student to wear the regular uniform on Tuesday and to come dressed for chapel on Thursday for this week only. We ask that girls plan not to wear stockings on this day. In commemoration of the Last Supper, we will observe our traditional foot washing ceremony during the service. We will welcome any parents who wish to worship with us on this Holy Thursday! \r\n

\r\nSaint Catherine of Siena Service Challenge
\r\nLast Week of the Service Challege - March 3-7
\r\n Saint Catherine of Siena, Italy lived in the 14th century. Called by God at an early age, Catherine remained faithful throughout ther life. Through her ministry and teachings to the underprivileged balanced with her wonderful oratory skills and wisdom, Catherine helped heal a great division within the Catholic Church.
\r\nOne of our goals at Live Oak is to develop citizenship and service-mindedness witin our students. We do this through providing opportunities for service in our community. We also invite our students to go a step beyond and find other service opportunities to help build our community. Our third quarter house competition will be service points. We encourage you as families to come up with good ideas for service for your children. Forms for recording hours of service can be found in the office. The forms may then be turned in at the office and house points will be recorded. Ideas include church volunteering, collecting clothes for charity, helping elderly neighbors, volunteering after school. Forms must be filled out completely with parent/supervisor signatures to receive house points.

For a 5th grader that might mean studying hieroglyphics and mummies in history, discussing the biblical account of Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egyptian slavery, while reading a book on the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in literature and constructing pyramids in art class. Study across the disciplines is designed to overlap and intertwine, bringing greater depth and better retention to learning.

Our teachers and administrators seek to cultivate and celebrate the possibilities within each child, avoiding the hampering dynamic of excessive competition. \r\nWe currently offer a Christian classical education beginning in the Grammar years JK (4 year olds)--Grammar 6, proceeding through the Logic years (grades 7th-9th), and concluding in the Rhetoric years (grades 10th-12th). \r\nGrammar School Scheduling
\r\nThe core curriculum in K-Grammar 6 will include Bible, history, language arts, math, and geography. The elective blocks will include studies in science, Spanish, Latin, art/art history, music/music history, and physical education. Other electives may be added as opportunities arise. Chapel is held weekly on Tuesday.
\r\nLogic School Scheduling
\r\nEach day includes electives – athletics, chapel, drama/speech, choir, and art. Science, math, and English are scheduled everyday. Geography, logic, Bible, Latin, special topic classes,fine arts, and study hall are weaved into the Logic schedule two or three days during the week.
\r\nEncore Enrollment
\r\nLive Oak offers core or encore status to students. Families who wish to provide academic instruction in the home setting may choose to attend the elective blocks as a supplement to home education in grades 1-3. In Grammar 4, 5, and Logic school encore students may enroll for athletics only. Encore students will be encouraged to take part in group activities and social events. Any student who is enrolled on a part time basis is expected to be receiving additional coursework under parental supervision. Part time enrollment at Live Oak does not represent a complete and thorough education.
\r\nAdmissions Policy
\r\nThe student body of Live Oak will be chosen through a formal application process. Written applications will be made available to all prospective students. An interview and family dialogue with each prospective student will follow to ensure the compatibility of the school’s educational philosophy for each child. Students of average to above average academic success are usually best suited to match the school\'s pace. Live Oak encourages cultural and ethnic diversity. Live Oak will admit students of any race, national, or ethnic origin and will not discriminate in the administration of its educational policies or school administered programs.
\r\nDiscipline
\r\nThe student body of Live Oak will be expected to behave in a manner worthy of Christ’s teachings. Virtues of Christian character such as respect for others and for God, love, obedience, and service will be strongly encouraged and modeled. It is the atmosphere that you sense when you walk into a school or talk to the students and teachers within. Tangible policies and practices contribute to it. Elements of school culture include the beliefs, values, and attitudes that children bring from home as well as those conveyed by the faculty, the school’s policies, the schedules and routines of the school, curriculum choice, and more. At Live Oak, we seek to create a school culture that nurtures in children a love of learning and a love of God. Here are some of the tangible ways we plan to do that:
\r\nTeachers
\r\nThe most important influence on school culture is the faculty. We will seek out faculty who demonstrate a love of God, a love of learning, and especially a love of children! The application process will include questions like these: “Who have been the most influential writers in your life?,” “How do you understand teaching as a calling?” and “What do you think are the goals of a good education?” Candidates will be asked to articulate their beliefs as a Christian, and discuss the way their beliefs impact their teaching.
\r\nOnce hired, faculty will be challenged to deepen their own grasp of the subjects they teach, as well as their mastery of the pedagogical arts. We will also provide professional development opportunities for faculty to reflect carefully about the connections between their subject matter and the Christian worldview. We are as eager to see faculty attend conferences on how we should think and live as Christians as we are eager to see them participate in, for example, a math workshop. Faculty will also meet weekly in order to stay united in purpose, to sharpen each other’s minds, and to communicate collectively about each child in the school.
\r\nDiscipline
\r\nThe ultimate task of education is to build character. Daily scripture readings will allow children to hear of God’s expectations for all His people, both teachers and students. Habits and routines will help minimize daily conflicts, as will an engaging curriculum. Students will also study exemplars of Christian virtue, and have opportunities to practice these virtues in the life of the school.
\r\nWhen children face situations leading them to act wrongly, teachers will try to redirect them into right action, drawing connections to the scripture readings where appropriate. When a child behaves wrongly, the child’s behavior will be corrected through logical and consistent consequences. Children will be encouraged to think not “What do I want to do?” but “What is the right thing to do?” Students will be encouraged to honor teachers, visitors, and fellow students in their mannerisms and conversations as an obligation of loving their neighbor.

\r\nLive Oak is not a church, but a community of the faithful united for the purpose of cultivating the love of God and the love of learning. Our chapel program will be the central community bonding experience. Students will sing hymns, read scripture, and hear stories about the heroes and heroines of the faith.

\r\nA classical Christian education is not the work of a school alone. Live Oak will offer programs for parents to deepen their own understanding of history, classical texts, and the way in which their faith shapes their worldview. Our aim is to support parents—who are a child’s first and best teachers—to nurture the love of learning in their children.

\r\nHeather McCaw: This is Mrs. McCaw\'s second year as a Junior Kindergarten Teacher at Live Oak. She holds a BS in Child Development and Family Relations with a concentration in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maine, is certified in K through 8th grade, and has taught Kindergarten in the public schools. She is married to Ian, Athletic Director at Baylor University, and they have four children, all of whom are students at Live Oak this year. They moved to Texas three years ago from Massachusetts where their two oldest children were involved in a classical Christian school.
\r\nDawn Holmes:
\r\nKindergarten
\r\nRuthanne Morris: Mrs. Morris is teaching one Kindergarten class for the second year at Live Oak. After earning a BS in Education from Baylor University, she taught Kindergarten for six years in public schools. Mrs. Morris also has six years of experience as a home educator, using much of the same curriculum we use at Live Oak. She is married to Neill and they have two daughters who are involved in Live Oak this year.
\r\nKristen Shell: Miss Shell is teaching one section of Kindergarten, which she taught when she joined the Live Oak faculty last January. Miss Shell graduated from Baylor University with a BSE in Elementary Education and a specialization in reading in December 2003. She holds a Texas Teacher\'s Certificate for Early Childhood through fourth grade. Before joining Live Oak, Miss Shell spent a year in a mission training school and worked at Sylvan Learning Center.
\r\nFirst Grade
\r\nKatie Eller: Mrs. Eller teaches one section of 1st grade. She received a BS in Education from Baylor University with a major in Elementary Education and holds a Texas Teaching Certificate for Early Childhood through 4th grade. Katie graduated Magna Cum Laude in Baylor’s first class under the current Education program, a program which integrates each education class with teaching in local schools. In this program, Katie taught 1st grade math and reading for one year in a classroom followed by teaching 3rd grade in an internship at another local public school. After graduating from Baylor, Katie began a teaching position at a private elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana until Hurricane Katrina sent her and her husband back to Waco where he could continue his seminary studies. Katie finished the year at a local public school, serving in a variety of teaching capacities, including Reading Specialist, Pre-K teaching assistant, 2nd grade, and 4th grade. This is her first year at Live Oak and she is excited to continue learning and growing professionally. Her husband, Mike, is now in his second year at Truett Seminary, pursing dual masters’ degrees in Divinity and Church Music. Mike is the worship leader at Taylor\'s Valley Baptist Church in Temple.
Sarah Johnson: Sarah Johnson is a graduate of the University of Oregon where she earned her degree in elementary education. Since then, she has worked as an aide at Eugene Christian School in Oregon before moving to Waco with her husband. This is her second year at Live Oak Classical School, the previous year being spent as an aide to Junior Kindergarten through second grade classes. She enjoys music and the outdoors and is happy to be a part of the community at Live Oak. \r\nSecond Grade
